Captions – sometimes referred to as subtitles – are the text representation of any spoken dialogue and are displayed at the same time as the audio visual content. High quality captions should be accurate, consistent and easily readable for end users.
While many options exist online to automatically generate captions, they are still largely unreliable, containing inaccurate information, minimal – if any – grammar or punctuation and can often convey the wrong meaning to people who rely on captions.
Starting from a high quality transcript, altFormats can create a range of single or double line caption formats in line with the DCMP Captioning Key guidelines. The most common web standard formats are SRT and WebVTT, but if you would like to request another format, depending on your delivery needs, please get in touch.
Typically, we will provide you with closed captions (can be enabled or disabled by the user) as this is the most common type of caption delivered to students. We can also provide open captions (embedded onto the video and cannot be disabled by the user) if required. Simply choose which option you prefer when you submit an order.
